About the pousada
Pousada Vila Kalango is one of the most well known of all the Jeri pousadas and is situated in one of the best locations, right on the beach close to the huge sand dune that everyone in town seems to ascend on a daily basis to contemplate the sunset. With 24 apartments of 3 different types stilt houses, bungalows and apartments it is one of the larger pousadas and definitely one of the more sophisticated, but with 5000 sq metres of gardens and a large (red!) pool there is still a tremendous feeling of space and peace and colour and harmony with nature.

Inaugurated in 1999 the Italian and Brazilian owners have created an idyllic place using almost entirely local materials, handicrafts and labour, which is in turn both rustic and sophisticatedly charming. For those wanting a bit more luxury combined with excellent service and a convenient spa this is definitely the place to come.

About the location
There is a big sign posted at the entrance to Jericoacoara National Park by the environmental agency IBAMA which says that no motor vehicles are allowed on the dunes. As we passed straight by in our 4x4 I asked the driver about it, to which he pointed to the IBAMA built road- a series of posts just visible in the sand with the part in between filled with a gently flowing river. Point taken!. It is easier to get to Jericoacoara in the summer months which in the north of Brazil means the dry season from June to November, but the difficulty of access means the town has avoided the worst of mass tourism. There are plenty of options of places to stay and lots of nice small shops, but there are no high rise hotels and no boutique shops- and curiously no banks either, so you’ll need plenty of cash. You will also need earplugs if you are past the partying all night stage, but that is a minor inconvenience in such a wonderful place. Stay at the Vila Kalanga if you want beach front sophistication, or the Pousada Ibirapuera if you want a cheaper  more “zen” experience. And climb that famous dune at sunset for a mystical experience .

Not to be missed ...

  • watching the sunset sitting on the famous crescent dune
  • trips to Pedra Furada, Lagoa Azul and Paraiso
  • Dona Amelia restaurant in town and Alexandre and Skylab on the beach

Starpoints and caveats
  • environmentally responsible
  • excellent service
  • 1st world sophistication with rustic charm
  • beachfront location

Try a different place if..
you prefer somewhere smaller and more intimate, or you are on a budget

Guest Book

The Vila took our breath away- situated right next to the giant sand dune of Jericoacoara with the most beautiful raised cabana rooms, pool, and central lounge area. The staff was incredibly nice and helpful which made a great difference. Almost ever... Read on ››
