Note: Where pousadas are off the beaten track, Google maps only show the nearest town, and are not an accurate guide to location.
Pousada Picinguaba is the archetypal hidden pousada, the sort you would never find if you had not already heard of its reputation, and the extraordinary beauty of Picinguaba bay.
The 10 rooms in the listed colonial- style mansion are all comfortable, with high quality sheets, chilled spring water and hammock on the varanda, but there the traditional “luxuries” stop. There is no TV, no telephone, no fridge, no airconditioning and no internet, let alone wi-fi. Indeed not even your mobile phone will work. The luxury here is in the fabulous location, the peace and quiet, the swimming pool overlooking the bay, the breathtaking views and, equally importantly, the friendly efficient service from all the staff.
Take a schooner trip, contemplate the views, dine by candlelight listening to the sound of the waves and just leave the world behind . If you can do that you'll find it totally idyllic..
You won`t find many foreigners or Brazilians who have ever heard of Picinguaba, a tiny village with a handful of houses and two churches around half an hour down the coast from Paraty. But therein of course lies its glory. Protected by law, due to its position in the state park of Serra do Mar (315,00 hectares bordering the Costa Verde),
Picinguaba is one of the few remaining fishing villages in the south where they still fish using traditional methods, and fishing is still the occupation of around 50% of the population. The backdrop of the village is mountains is virgin atlantic rainforest with wonderful scarlet-red tie sangue birds; the foreground the fabulous bay of Picinguaba; the beach- just boats and nets and a couple of quiet beachbars.
UNESCO categorises this area as world heritage, one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. One is left hoping it will always stay this way.
