About the pousada
The Solar da Ponte Verde (Green Bridge Lodge) is only an hour and a half's drive from downtown Rio but is light years away in terms of scenery, atmosphere and style. With only four suites and one chalet this is very much the home of lawyer owners Paul and Nazareth, and the feeling you get when you stay here is very much of honoured guest, rather than just another visitor. All vegetarian meals are prepared under the watchful eye of Nazareth and the result is gourmet and creative and flavourful even for a confirmed carnivore like myself.
The house itself nestles at the foot of 2 mountains- the Pedra de Amarylis and Maria Comprida and was designed to blend in with its surroundings whilst offering superior comfort in every sense. Suites are spacious with wonderful power showers and locally produced beauty products, and best of all superb views.
Lounge by the pool, relax in the sauna, curl up with a DVD by the fire or just gaze out over the wonderful landscape. One thing is for sure- you won't want to leave!
About the location
Solar da Ponte Verde is situated just past the village of Araras, which in turn is just past Petropolis, the former Emperor's favourite mountain retreat when things got too hot in Rio de Janeiro. As a hidden pousada it is unbeatable, as there are no signs to tell you how to get there and if you don't know where you are going you will certainly miss it, situated as it is at the end of a long cobbled and then dirt track which appears to be going nowhere. Only when you reach the green bridge do you know for certain you are on the right road!
This is a place where mountain retreat meets the tropics- a place of spectacular physical beauty where butterflies and birds, and monkeys, frogs and cicadas abound. For those who appreciate the sometimes extremely loud cacophony of nature it is a very special paradise.
