About the pousada
The Vila Serrano came highly recommended by two other excellent pousadas in Lencois, so I was expecting something good but nothing as lovely as this. I just wished I had had had time to stay and mentally planned another trip to do just that.
The original house that was built now houses the reception and litchen and breakfast room and is in rustic/chic style, following ecological principles. The 13 suites in turn are housed in colonial style buildings with beautiful wooden furniture and wrought iron lamps, comfortable beds and solar heated showers. For families there ae possibilities for up to 5 people sharing a suite, and also 2 suites which are linked with a private staircase.
Swiss/ Brazilian owners, Chris and Sandra have created a very special place, full of interesting details: the mosaic fountain, the herb and vegetable garden, the TV/lounge room, with huge range of DVDs, the miriad of books for borrowing and the day spa for those who want to gently unwind in between the hiking and exploring of the park.
Add this to the attentive multilingual service and great atmosphere and Vila Serrano makes a truly wonderful addition to the Hidden Pousada collection.
About the location
Lencois is the main town in the Chapada Diamantina and the place where most of the eco-tourist agencies are based, but outside high season it is just a sleepy colonial town with very little traffic an cafes where you can sit and drink and chat or work without worrying when they might say it's time to leave.
Once the business centre of the Brazilian diamond trade the colonial buildings are testament to a wealth beyond dreams. Many are now in need of a coat of paint but the place is still vibrant and there is a thriving eco tourist trade for people who want to explore the Chapada Diamantina and enjoy the hikes to mountains, waterfalls and caves. This is an extraordinary and magical place-one that people come back to again and again.
