About the pousada
Pousada Um Meia Três is one of a number of newly opened pousadas in the Santa Teresa area of Rio, and it prides itself on being small and friendly, with the atmosphere of a pousada, but the facilities of a boutique hotel. British owners, Bill and Sue, are fabulous hosts who keep the bar open for as long as their guests want to sit around and chat, and frequently accompany them to the more hidden parts of Rio, including a "safe" favela with an unusual jazz club. They are also known for their informal barbecues by the pool. For those that prefer the comfort and privacy of their room, there is wi-fi throughout and panoramic views over the city centre but you probably won't use this much as you are right in the centre of Santa Teresa and across the road from one of the best restaurants in town!. Um Meia Tres overall? A great addition to Hidden Pousadas, and one which is already getting excellent feedback.
About the location
Santa Teresa is a wonderfully hidden part of Rio de Janeiro, perched on a hill between the centre of the city and Zona Sul, where most of the beaches are. Long known for its bohemian culture, and infamous for being home for decades to Ronnie Biggs, of Great Train Robbery fame, the area is a delight of old colonial mansions, and cobbled streets, served by old style trams. The slower, more "alternative" pace of life here attracts artists, musicians and writers, many of whom hang out in the numerous bars and restaurants dotted about the place. For travellers who prefer laid back charm and history to being right close to a beach, it's a wonderful place to stay.
