Pousada Mangabeiras, Boipeba, Bahia - fabulous new pousada on the hills overlooking Boipeba beach and ocean

I first discovered the Pousada Mangabeiras as I was wandering down Boipeba beach looking for Guido's lobster shack, and my first thought was why would anyone choose to build somewhere so completely off the beaten track, only accessible by uneven path or along the beach. It was only as I reached the top of the steps and got my breath back that I realised why. This place is gorgeous!. Fabulous 360o views of beaches, ocean and neighbouring Tinharé island, wonderful pool, flat screen TV with DVDs in the 10 spacious suites, "Florence" beauty products in the bathroom, and solar powered power showers. Total exclusivity and total luxury!

This is a family run pousada which at the same time is totally professional, a place where excellent service is always expected. It is also a pousada with an ecological conscience, which prides itself in the knowledge that not one tree was cut down in its construction. For people looking for peace, tranquility and the more gentle luxuries in life, in a place where mobile phones don't work except when they feel like it, Pousada Mangabeiras is a romantic place to chill out which you won't want to leave in a hurry- even if you could!

Boipeba is a jewel of an island located amongst the mangrove swamps to the southwest of Salvador- and south of the much better known Morro de Sao Paulo. Boipeba is the main village, and the island is predominantly just miles and miles of deserted unspoilt sandy beaches with the occasional fishing village and small shacks where you can stop for a beer or coconut water and often freshly caught fish and seafood. 

The more adventurous way to get to Boipeba from Salvador is by taking the ferryboat to Bom Despacho, bus to Valenca then speedboat (lancha rápida), all of which takes around 5 hours. For those with less time the easier way is to take the air taxi direct from Salvador International airport which drops you on the neighbouring island of Tinharé and includes the connecting boat which takes you across to Boipeba. There you will find a boy with a wheelbarrow waiting to take your luggage down the beach  and up the steps to the pousada.

Boipeba is a magical place, and one which, thanks to the difficulty of getting there, has escaped any kind of mass tourism. The Pousada Mangabeiras is located on the hill between the main Boipeba beach with its laid back beach bars and the deserted beach of Tassimirim, and bungalows nestle amongst 48,000 metres of atlantic rainforest full of fruit trees and birds and small fauna and flora. Absolute magic.
