About the pousada
What a magical place! A pousada which manages to combine eco-friendly principles with warmth, comfort and style- all in one of the most beautiful places on earth, surrounded by mountains, peace and quiet. The 12 suites, some overlooking the mountains and some the gardens, are all well appointed with comfortable beds, hot showers, locally produced soaps and aromatic pillows. Some even have a fireplace for those cold evenings after a dip in the hot tub.
Owners Marcos and Vania had lived in the area for many years but the pousada itself has only been open for 4 because they wanted to get it absolutely right before accepting guests and friends. And right it is. Everywhere you notice the attention to detail and special little touches in the rooms, the saunas, the restaurant, the pool. I came for 2 days but could easily have stayed for weeks.
About the location
There is no fast way to get to the Capao or to the Pousada Lagoa das Cores. It is probably the archtypical hidden pousada! Either you can get the plane to Lencois from Salvador (only on Saturdays) and then R$150 transfer- or the bus to Palmeiras from Salvador (7 hours) and then a 45 minute transfer down dirt roads, or a bus from Lencois and then the same transfer. Or you can drive the whole way. But it is definitely worth it!
The Vale do Capao (Capao valley) sits right in the heart of the Chapada Diamantina national park and is an area of outstanding beauty with flat topped mountains and ridges which date back 3.6 billion years and were once at the bottom of the ocean. The valley itself is 1000 metres high and the temperature is correspondingly lower than the coast of Bahia, averaging 19C year round. There are wonderful hikes to do nearby of varying levels of difficulty, but somehow here, unlike Lencois, you do not feel obliged to do them. Just lazing in the hammock contemplating the views seems a perfectly reasonable, and extremely pleasant, option.
