About the pousada
We nearly didn’t make it to Espelho. My partner in crime had had enough of potholed dirt tracks and she could definitely see storm clouds looming, and rain coming, which would surely make it impossible to get there (or get back). In the end we discovered that the really tricky part of the road is in between Caraiva and Espelho so I managed to convince her that if we could get through that before the deluge, we would be OK. And we were. And the sun shone. And we really couldn’t have missed it or the two wonderful sister pousadas here- Enseado do Espelho and Recanto do Espelho.
Of the two, the Enseado is the more chic- with an amazing bar and restaurant, super comfortable suites with upmarket toiletries, and free wi-fi throughout, but both are wonderfully welcoming and great places to stay.
About the location
Espelho is about midway between Caraiva and Trancoso and it is basically one long stretch of sand flanked by cliffs, with a few pousadas and bars dotted along it. It is reputedly the best beach in Brazil after Fernando de Noronha, and I can find no reason to argue with that, particularly in the early morning light, and at dusk after the day trippers have left.
It is a different type of tourist who comes here, rather than Caraiva. Here you have rustic chic rather than rustic simplicity and the level of comfort (and the prices) reflect this. Whilst access remains by potholed dirt road, Espelho will be saved from mass tourism, and that’s exactly the way all the locals want to keep it.
A wonderful find and a place I will definitely return to.
Not to be missed
- boat trip south to the marine park of Abrolhos (whalewatching best August and September)
- trip on foot to Caraiva- turtle watching enroute
- boat trip south to Corumbau
- a walk north at low tide to the praia dos amores ( beach of loves)
Pousada Starpoints
- rustic-chic, with wi-fi, bathrobes, and Natura products in bathroom
- wonderful colourful, airy bar and lounge/restaurant with free wi-fi
- fabulous food
| Try a different place if... you want to pay less and still have a sea view (see Recanto do Espelho) |
