Alison's pousada review
Pousada Bela Vista sits on a small embankment direcly beside the Rio Negro and has views to die for together with a rustic charm that immediately makes you feel at home. Taken over by German/Brazilian couple Claus and Meire in 2009 the improvements since then have been notable, not least a large blue tiled pool, children's playground, hammock area and upgrades to the bar and restaurant which now serves lunch and dinner as well as breakfast.
Rooms are basic but comfortable and clean and all now have private bathrooms as well as small fridges, airconditioning and flatscreen TV. This is a place where you get excellent value for money as well as a choice of options of how to spend your days- visiting the national parks and the pink dolphins, checking out the handcrafts in town, visiting the ghost town of Velho Airão, exploring the grottos and pyroglyphs (rock paintings) in the forest. Regrettably I didn't have time to do any of the latter which is another extremely good excuse to be returning soon!
Novo Airão is a small town of 18,000 people located on the River Negro, 180 kms or a 2.5 hour drive from Manaus. It's not only an important centre of tourism for those wanting to visit the national parks of Anavilhanas and Jaú, but is also famous for boat building, (of the Amazon 2 decker sort,) for its distinctive local artesanato and for having first and only research centre for pink dolphins in the world. You can’t actually feed or swim with the dolphins anymore but you can use the submerged platform to get up close and personal (and take some nice photos!).
- Visit to the pink dophin centre
- Boat trips around the Anavilhanas archipelago
- Trip to Velho Airão, the grottos and the rock paintings
- Visits to the wooden and reed handcraft centres in town
- Chilling in the pool looking out over the Rio Negro
- beautiful views over the Rio Negro and the Anavilhanas Archipelago.
- variety of excursions and expeditions on offer
