About the pousada
Pousada Mangueira in one sense is not at all hidden. Get to Morerê beach on Boipeba island and ask anyone for Gary and they will immediately point out the pousada. Morerê itself, however, is truly hidden and if you come the land/sea way from Salvador it will take you the best part of a day to get here- the last part done by tractor, small boat or a 2 hour leisurely walk along the beach from Boipeba.
The trip itself is beautiful, if you don`t mind a bit of adventure, and the pleasure continues when you arrive. Pousada Mangueira is small, but the three spacious and comfortable bungalows are set in a wonderfully lush garden of fruit trees, coconut palms and tropical flowers, and you are only a few moments away from the beach bars and restaurants. There is no airconditioning or TV in the rooms, but there is a small fridge, a ceiling fan, anti-mosquito net, a light you can actually read by and breakfast in the morning served on your private veranda.
My visit coincided with blazing sun and torrential rain. Neither spoilt my stay. This is a place where life runs at a slower pace and where any problem has a way round it. My advice? Leave your stress behind, come with minimal luggage and just chill out with Gary's wonderful hospitality.
About the location
Morerê is the third biggest village on the island of Boipeba and is home to approximately 350 people. No-one seems to know exactly how many. Although there are now several pousadas here and power, light and internet have arrived, it is a place which still feels stuck in time- an active fishing village with just a couple of sandy tracks leading to a small school, general store and some rustic beachbars and restaurants. The latter offer some pretty good home-made food, particularly the local fish stew or "moqueca", but it's wise to have a big lunch during low season as when business is slack they have a tendency to close early in the evening.
Totally off the beaten track, Morerê is a sleepy, traffic free, place where everyone knows everyone and where the only noise you will find is that of the sea or the odd cock crowing. The unexpected torrential rain we had during my trip had me wondering whether the tractor would make it up the hill to take me back to Boipeba village and the boat back to Valença. I settled back with a good book and after a while it somehow didn't seem to matter anymore.
