Alison's pousada review
Marta's Rio Guesthouse is a totally unique pousada crafted out of the 2 top floors of a residential art deco block with beautifully inlaid wood floors, a sweeping curved staircase and amazing views over the whole stretch of Copacabana beach.
Then there is owner Marta who is equally unique: an effusively bubbly host who has worked in tourism for years and knows everything there is to know about what you should see, when you should go and how to do it.
There are only 6 suites here and all are at the back or side of the building so they don't get the views or direct sunlight but are much less noisy and hot than they would be at the front. The style is homely rather than chic so don't come expecting luxury, but beds are super comfortable, linen and towels top quality. There are also large antique wardrobes in most rooms and air conditioning if you need it and a good shower room. You get a key to your room and to the pousada on arrival so you are free to come and go whenever you like.
I only got to spend one night here at Marta's Rio Guesthouse and it was definitely not enough. I have my eyes on that large terrace upstairs and can just see myself reclining on my lounger, reading a book, sipping a caipirinha, looking out over the beach and the Sugar Loaf behind- one of the most iconic views in the world. Paradise.
If Rio de Janeiro is voted one of the most beautiful cities in the world then Copacabana must certainly be one of the most beautiful city beaches in the world. In its full extent it is 6 kilometres of golden sand and it is flanked by newly designed beach kiosques where you can get drinks and snacks from dawn till dusk.
This is the heart of what is called the "Zona Sul" or south zone of Rio and transport is easy by bus and often by metro from here to anywhere you might want to go- the Sugar Loaf in Urca, Corcovado in Cosme Velho, the chic beaches of Ipanema and Leblon round the corner.
The spirit here is laid back and fun and there is a lively beach and bar culture which attracts families and individuals alike. It is also a non hassley, predominantly safe area to stay despite what you read in the press. You're not going to be walking out along the beach with a camera round your neck, a map in hand, wearing your gold jewellery and you won't want to walk along the beach itself at night but otherwise you just need to take normal city precautions and you'll have a great stay.
