About the pousada
Fazenda Catuçaba is a wonderful example of the best type of refurbishment where all the period features of the original colonial mansion are maintained, and combine with the most exquisite taste in contemporary design and comfort.
There are 3 villas here accommodating 8 suites and 2 mega suites, and all are fabulous. The one I stayed in was also huge at 40 sq mtrs, with high ceilings and views to die for. Some suites have been hewn out of the original outhouses but even when the building itself is new the feel in the suites offer old style comfort with wooden floors and square paned shuttered windows, beautiful furnishings and photography and fresh flowers everywhere. .
Fazenda Catuçaba doesn't offer luxury in the accepted sense. You won't find room service here, nor airconditioning, frigobar , internet access or even a TV. What you will get is extra large super comfortable beds with top quality linen, a wonderful bathroom, free mineralwater from the spring, fruit bowl and of course home made breakfasts to die for
Come here for the beauty of the surroundings, the gracious living, the peace, the quiet, the views and the stars and you will definitely experience a small piece of heaven.
About the location
Fazenda Catuçaba is definitely a pousada which classifies as super hidden, and despite being only a few hours drive from São Paulo, it doesn't appear on any readily available map! The easiest way to explain its position is that it lies 23 kms from São Luiz de Paraitinga, a historical village roughly equidistant from Taubaté in the north and Ubatuba on the coast. Most roads round this area are unasphalted, and signposting is minimal, so it is best to arrive during daylight hours the first time at least..
Once here you'll see immediately why Emmanuel, the owner, fell in love with the place. Not just the Fazenda but also the setting is beautiful, with rolling hills on all sides, waterfalls, lakes, streams, and incredible sunsets. The Fazenda is almost completely self sufficient with its own vegetable garden, and cheese, jellies, honey, cheese bread and cachaça are either made on site or locally using Fazenda produce. But what clinched it for me was waking up to birdsong, swooping birds outside the window, fabulous views and total peace and quiet. This morning really was golden.
