Alison's pousada review
Everyone I spoke to on the Peninsula of Maraú in Bahia seemed to have heard of Butterfly House and said how amazing it was, but no-one had actually been there so I was intrigued to find out what it was really like.
The verdict? Simply extraordinary. The brainchild of Chloe, a young English woman who allegedly just stuck a pin in a map and ended up here, this place has Moroccan/French/Brazilian style oozing from every part of it, from the super well appointed suites to the restaurant, the bar, the gazebo and the pool.
There are only 3 suites here and 5 bungalows spread over the spacious grounds. I am sure I got offered the best bungalow but actually I would have been in seventh heaven in any of them. All are beautifully designed with in-laid Morroccan tiles and liberal use of bamboo and locally made wicker furniture. Plus there's a large flat screen TV if you can't do without the news. Showers are excellent and bungalows all have a small varanda. Mine (the Almirante) also had an outside shower and steaming pão de queijo (cheese breads) and hot coffee appeared on the varanda in the morning as if by magic. I was well spoilt!
This is a place you simply don't want to leave and one of the reasons is the wonderful atmosphere created by managers Alienor and Damian and the superb cuisine of Portobello Road trained chef Elias. I said I wasn't very hungry having just had a big lunch. No problem. Elias just kept on bringing out miniportions of his favourite dishes each one better than the last, together with a selection of the most marvellous cocktails made by barman JáJá (literally "Right now!" in English). And all served in the beautiful gazebo set in the tropical gardens by the pool.
I went for a long walk along the beach the following morning soaking in the sea air and and appreciating the miles and miles of soft sand flanked by palmtrees in each direction. And I realised that one night was most definitely not enough. This place is paradise!!
Butterfly House is located right on the beach in the Cassange area of the Peninsula of Maraú and you won't find it if you don't know it is there! If you have a 4x4 the place is accessible by road from Itacaré in the south but all roads are a mixture of dirt and sand and boast a wide array of potholes so it's not an easy drive if it has been raining a lot. An easier way of doing things is to get a boat from Camamu on the Bahian mainland to Barra Grande, the main village on Maraú and then get the pousada to organise you a transfer or pick up a taxi (cost around R$70,00). Or get the pousada to organise a private boat from Camamu to Porto Jobel 10 minutes away (R$150,00) and they will pick you up from there.
Maraú is an ecological paradise, a beautiful peninsula with palm fringed sandy beaches running the whole length of the eastern Atlantic Ocean as well as inland waters, mangroves, natural swimming pools, coral reefs and Atlantic rain forest. Definitely not to be missed!
