Is Chapada Diamantina an easy destination to visit with children?
This is my second short trip to Brazil. The first time we did Rio and Ilha Grande. All your pousadas were fantastic! This time, we’re thinking about Iguaçu, Salvador and the Maraú Peninsula. We have 12 days, arriving in and departing from Rio. Would it be too tight with flights/travelling? Or should we concentrate our time exploring Salvador and the Maraú Peninsula and maybe Chapada Diamantina? We have a 9 year old child. Is Chapada Diamantina an easy place to go with a child? Also, if we were to spend more time in the Maraú Peninsula (instead of going to Iguaçu), would you recommend staying at more than one pousada to be able to explore the area better? Some advice would be greatly appreciated. Also if we can fly to Ilhéus, would it be much faster/easier to get to the Maraú Peninsula?
Thanks for your email and kind comments about our pousadas. Glad you’re coming back for more exploring!
I think if you are travelling with a 9 year old I would stick to a maximum of 4 places and maybe leave out Iguaçu this time.
A possible scenario might be:
Flight to Salvador
Bus to Lençóis in Chapada Diamantina
Night 8: Overnight bus(es) to Camamú
via Feira de Santana for boat to Barra Grande
on Peninsula de Maraú
and onward taxi to Taipus de Fora.
Check out this blog for more information on how to get to Chapada Diamantina
Return flight Ilhéus to Rio
Night 12: Rio de Janeiro
There’s no problem with taking a child to Chapada Diamantina but there is a lot of travel in the trip as described above and the distances are huge. For example, Salvador to Lençóis in Chapada Diamantina is 5.5 hours on the bus. You might have to leave out Chapada Diamantina unless you are all very good long distance travellers.
Hope that helps!
