By Car Transfer: Wherever you are staying in the Pantanal it is best to get the pousada to organise a transfer from the airport because all pousadas operate on a fully inclusive basis, which means both food, excursions and local guides are included. Renting a car is not advisable because apart from the fact that signposting is minimal and roads are often challenging even with a 4×4, your car would just be sitting there doing nothing for the duration of your stay. Fly to Cuiaba airport and take the pousada pick up transfer , which will drive east and then south.

Pantanal, Mato Grosso, BrazilPousada Araras is situated just off the Transpantaneira highway, a couple of hours from Cuiaba, 40 minutes southwest of Poconé, the nearest town. It one of the first pousadas you come to in the northern Pantanal and runs a shuttle service once or twice a day . For Pousada do Rio Mutum you could get closer going to the town of to Santo Antonio do Leverger then on to Mimoso (which looks big on the map but actually consists of a couple of houses and a store). Around 6 kms of dirt road further on there is a plank bridge and that’s where the boat will normally pick you up from for the 20 minute transfer to the pousada. The whole trip only takes around 2.5 hours so Mutum and this is an excellent option for those who want to get to nature fast!

By Bus/Taxi: The city of Campo Grande is the major gateway to the South Pantanal and the only large centre of population in Mato Grosso do Sul.  For Fazenda Baia Grande you can get a bus, which is a 3 hour bus ride to Miranda and then an easy 50 minute taxi ride to the the Fazenda.

Fazenda Baia das Pedras, Pantanal South, Mato Grosso do Sul, BrazilBy Plane/Car: It is possible to charter a small plane to take you from Campo Grande into Nhecolândia and other parts of the Pantanal South. There are specialised air companies in Campo Grande who can organise this and chartered planes allow you to have the wonderful panoramic view of the wetlands. However, this is the pricier option! If you are visiting Fazenda Baia das Pedras it will take you 6 hours by 4×4 transfer from Campo Grande. The last 3.5 hours of this is along dirt roads, but the trip is most definitely worth it for the experience you get at the other end.

Tips: Both the northern and southern Pantanal are incredible places to visit and arguably better than the Amazon in terms of the wildlife you actually get to see. So just choose the pousada you like the look of and get them to tell you the transfer/pick up options for arrival and departure before you confirm your flights. That way the travel hassle will be minimal and you’ll be able to go straight out to appreciate everything the area has to offer.
