GETTING TO PENINSULA DE MARAÚ:

FROM SALVADOR:

Getting to Peninsula de Maraú, Bahia, BrazilBy Ferry/Bus/Boat: Take a 45 minute ferry boat from Porto de Salvador to Bom Despacho, You will exit the ferry into the Bus station where you can get a ticket for the bus to Camamu. This

costs around R$ 38 and takes about 3.5 hours to get there. From Camamu the quickest option is to take a speed boat to Barra Grande (lancha rápida). This only take 30 minutes and costs around R$30. There is also a slow boat option, which runs during the day and costs less, but takes 1.5 hours.

Once in the main village of Barra Grande on Maraú you can normally get a wheelbarrow boy from the pier to take your luggage to your pousada (streets on the peninsula are all dirt/sand so rolling luggage is pretty difficult!). If you are staying in other places you can pick up a taxi in the main street where you arrive.  For Dreamland Bungalows or Pousada Bambu Dourado in Taipu de Fora this will cost approximately R$40. For Pousada Lagoa da Cassange , Butterfly House or Casa Maison B&B in Cassange this will cost around R$80 and for  Casa dos Arandis, a bit further south, you’ll probably be paying around R$120.

An alternative way to get to these pousadas is to get the pousada to organise you a a private boat transfer from Camamu (R$150,00) to Porto Jobel and they will pick you up there. This way is well worth it if you want to get to paradise fast and it avoids all the potholed road from Barra Grande. However, whatever you do, do not get on the boat without making sure there will be someone to pick you up when you get there as Jobel is purely a deserted place with a rickety pier where boats can stop. There is no village, no shops, no taxis and more importantly no telephone!!

By air: Fly to Ilheus 150 kms to the south then bus with Cidade Sol bus company to Camamu (allow 2.5 hours) and the rest as above. Alternatively an airport transfer from Ilheus airport direct to your pousada will cost you around R$300,00.

FROM ITACARÉ:

Getting to Peninsula de Maraú, Bahia, BrazilBy Ferry/Car:  Take a ferry from Itacaré directly over to the Southern tip of Peninsula de Maraú and then drive the rest of your way.

Tips: If you are driving we recommend a 4X4 vehicle, as the dirt roads are potholed, which are often very difficult to get across if it rains.

By Bus/ boat: Get a bus from Itacaré to Camamu with Cidade Sol bus company. These run hourly until 11am and then again after 2pm, take around an hour and cost around R$9.00. From Camamu take the speed boat (lancha rápida) over to Barra Grande. This only take 30 minutes and costs around R$30. There is also a slowboat option which costs less, but takes 1.5 hours.

    Hi Alison,
we decided to stay at Butterfly Bahia Pousada for a few days on our trip. Is there a better option to go directly from Morro de Sao Paulo? We’re going from Salvador to Morro and want to continue to Marau if possible without going back to Salvador.

    Thanks a lot
